The castle changed hands several times over the following centuries and was fired upon by retreating Jacobite forces in 1689 and later used as a hospital during the period leading up to the Battle of the Boyne. Now a National Monument, the interior of the castle is inaccessible due to the danger from falling masonry, however when we were there, it looked like they were working on the interior so they might be able to open it up at one point.
I was glad to see that they were trying to restore the castle, because the outside had several places where people had graffitied it, so hopefully if it gets restored a little more, perhaps it will be better protected from graffiti hackers (I refuse to call them graffiti artists).
