You think postage rates in the US are high? To mail a letter in Ireland, it's 55p. If you're mailing international, it's 95p.
The Postal Service is run by a private company, not the government. The mail does not run on Saturday or Sunday. If you're not home when a package is delivered, you have to pick it up at a special post office for packages. They won't bring it back. They don't take credit cards, check cards or checks. Cash only. But they do sell greeting cards at the post office and they also have a small selection of stuff you can buy as gifts and send. You could just do your shopping there and then mail it. Or not. :0)
