"Carrck-a-Rede" means "rock in the road." Salmon fishermen orginally built the bridge to connect the mainland with a salmon cannery located on the island. Although no one has ever fallen off of the bridge, many tourists, unable to face walking back across to the mainland, have had to be taken off the island by boat.
We stopped by here on our way home from the Giant's Causeway. It is a beautiful drive along the coast. Because I knew there was no way I would cross the bridge, after already having experienced vertigo just walking on the rocks at Giant's Causeway, I sat in the car while my husband went down to the bridge. He enjoyed it immensely. He did warn that there was a very long and extremely steep stairway that led to the bridge and that one would have to climb back up to get back out.
